Buxus Sempervirens

Autumn colour

We have certainly been feeling the drop in temperature in the last couple of days. The parks in London are carpeted with brown, orange and red leaves creating a feast for our eyes.  We have also been busy planting bulbs for the spring, selecting a wide combination of shapes and colours in order to create another visionary feast.

It is very easy to add autumn colour and interest to your garden by choosing the right trees and shrubs. Japanese maple, Euonymus alatusCotinus and Parrotia are just some examples of trees that will add beautifully strong colours before dropping the leaves.

Cotinus ‘Grace’

Acer palmatum ‘Osakazuki’

Another seasonal favourite is Cornus.  Once the leaves have dropped the stems act like vivid red and orange sculptures, adding striking interest to borders.

Cornus alba ‘Sirinica’

Robinia pseudoacacia

A very interesting shrub is Hamamelis . The initial autumn colour is replaced by flowers in early winter which provide a soft and lovely scent.

Creating the perfect autumn garden or terrace only takes a little planning – being adventurous at this time of year can result in outdoor spaces that are just as interesting as those seen in the spring and summer months.
